The remains of the largest creature on the Earth excavated in Argentina

Hi! 😉I hope that there are some fans of Jurassic Park among my readers, because if there are, then today’s post is just right for them! 🐊As for me, to be honest, I've never been interested in dinosaurs as a kid, but I must admit that the older I am, the more these extinct animals impress me. So let’s not prolong this introduction and move on to the concretes!

The latest news from Argentina :  a group of palaeontologists discovered the remains of an unknown dinosaur which could have been gigantic

Although the remains of this nameless dinosaur were first discovered in 2012 in the province of Neuquén in northwest Patagonia, the entire skeleton has still not been fully excavated. Nevertheless, the bones that have been dug up so far (the 24 vertebrae of the tail and elements of the pelvic and pectoral girdle) suggest that the ancient giant was a titanosaur (a long-necked and herbivorous dinosaur). What is most fascinating about this discovery is that these 98 million-year-old remains may belong to one of the largest animal ever to walk the Earth!

However, scientists are currently unable to accurately estimate the size of the discovered titanosaur. This is mainly because in order to calculate the size of an animal, scientists need the dimensions of the long bones (such as the humerus or femur), and these have not been excavated yet.

"It is a huge dinosaur, but we expect to find much more of the skeleton in future field trips, so we'll have the possibility to address with confidence how really big it was" – Alejandro Otero, a palaeontologist with Argentina's Museo de La Plata

"Given the measurements of the new skeleton, it looks likely that this is a contender for one of the largest, if not the largest, sauropods that have ever been found"  Paul Barrett, a palaeobiologist at the Natural History Museum in London

As we can find out from the article published on the CCN website, the newly discovered titanosaur could be in size and weight close to another dinosaur living in this territory, that is to say to Argentinosaurus which measured up to 40 meters and weighed up to 110 tons.

Although the vision of meeting such a giant makes me shiver, I must admit that I’d love to experience it! Yeah I know… It's easy to say that sitting comfortably at a desk and sipping a tea 😛 Lucky for us, we have a whole range of movies and cartoons about dinosaurs, such as "The good dinosaur", that I highly recommend! 📽

At the end, I’d like to give you (as always) a few articles about the latest discovery from Patagonia:
